Treatment fit for a fisherman

Living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) since he was a child, Tom Choquette always knew dialysis was a real possibility. So, Tom took charge of his health at an early age—exercising and eating a kidney-friendly diet—to avoid dialysis for as long as he could.

At 56, Tom found out he had congestive heart failure. It was finally time for him to start preparing for dialysis. As a lifelong advocate for his own health, Tom began researching his treatment options and worked closely with his nephrologist. One thing was for certain: Tom wanted his treatment to fit his lifestyle.

Being an active fisherman and still working, Tom decided that at-home peritoneal dialysis (PD) would give him the most freedom in his schedule and the flexibility to keep pursuing his interests. While Tom waits for a transplant, he's committed to staying his healthiest on PD.

Many experts agree that home dialysis—either peritoneal or hemodialysis—is the best option for treating kidney failure whenever possible. Discuss the options with your doctor. If it’s a fit, your care team can guide you through every step of the process—from getting your home ready to monthly check-ins.
